Minor oral surgery is a branch of dentistry that involves procedures that are typically performed in a dental office or clinic setting, as opposed to a hospital. These procedures may include the removal of wisdom teeth, the treatment of impacted canines, and the removal of supernumerary teeth.
The procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia (numbing the area) or conscious sedation, which is a milder form of anaesthesia that allows the patient to be awake and responsive during the procedure. Depending on the case, IV sedation may also be used.
After the procedure, the patient will typically experience some discomfort and swelling, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs. The recovery time will depend on the specific procedure and the individual patient, but most patients are able to return to normal activities within a few days.
Minor oral surgery is done by a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery or by a general dentist with additional training in oral surgery.

1. Apicectomies
An apicectomy is a surgical procedure where the tip of a tooth's root is removed to remove an infection that cannot be resolved by a root canal. The tooth is usually restored after the procedure. It is an advanced procedure done by an endodontist or oral surgeon.
If you are struggling with an abscess or infection on one of your front teeth and your tooth has already been treated with a root canal. An apicoectomy may be a solution.
2. Removal of supernumerary teeth
Removal of supernumerary teeth refers to the surgical removal of extra teeth that are not part of the normal complement of teeth in the human mouth. Supernumerary teeth can cause problems such as crowding, impaction, and malposition of adjacent teeth. They are typically removed by an oral surgeon and may require a local or general anaesthetic.
At Kromboom Dental Centre, our dentists will take a 3D x-ray of your mouth to locate exactly where the extra tooth is, to be able to safely and easily remove it.
3. Exposure of impacted teeth for orthodontic reasons
Exposure of impacted teeth is a surgical procedure where a tooth that has not yet erupted is uncovered and made visible in order to be moved with orthodontic treatment such as braces or Invisalign. It's done by an oral surgeon, which may require local/general anaesthetic.
At Kromboom Dental Centre, our dentists will take a 3D x-ray of your mouth to locate exactly where the impacted tooth is, to be able to safely and easily remove it.
4. Treatment of oral trauma
Treatment of oral trauma is the management and care of injuries to the mouth, teeth, gums and jaw. This can include cleaning and suturing of wounds, splinting of injured teeth, stabilisation of jaw fractures, and antibiotics to prevent infection. In some cases, follow-up treatment may be necessary.

5. Frenectomies
At KDC, we offer comprehensive care for lip-tie and tongue-tie through a procedure known as a frenectomy. This oral surgery procedure effectively treats and releases the frenulum, a small fold of tissue connecting the lip or tongue to the gums or floor of the mouth, allowing for improved movement and function.
