Amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings, are a type of dental filling that contains a mixture of metals, including mercury.
The safe removal of amalgam fillings requires special techniques and equipment to minimize exposure to the mercury vapor that is released during the removal process. This can include the use of a rubber dam, high-volume evacuation (HVE) and a dental dam, a cold-water spray, a mercury vapor analyzer, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
It's important to note that some people may be allergic to the metals contained in the amalgam fillings and some may have aesthetic concerns. In those cases, it may be replaced with suitable alternative materials.
