Type of therapy that focuses
on the muscles

This aspect of dentistry is very new. It has been pioneered by a group in the USA and KDC is proud to be one of the only providers in South Africa.

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a type of therapy that focuses on the muscles and movements of the face, jaw, and tongue. The goal of OMT is to correct any dysfunction or imbalances in these areas that may be contributing to issues such as malocclusion, or misaligned teeth, sleep disorders, and speech difficulties.

OMT typically includes exercises to improve muscle tone and strength, as well as to correct habits such as thumb-sucking, mouth breathing, and tongue-thrusting. The therapy may be used in conjunction with other treatments such as orthodontics, dentistry, and speech therapy.
OMT is often used to treat a wide range of conditions such as open bite, crossbite, overbite, underbite, and speech disorders such as articulation and lisp. The therapy can also be beneficial for people who have difficulty swallowing, breathing through the nose, and chronic mouth breathing, as well as sleep apnea.

At Kromboom Dental Centre, we have three trained and certified Orofacial Myofunctional Therapists. Our dedicated team believes in interceptive treatment and is all trained to detect any possible OMT issues. Our therapists provide an integrated and compassionate approach to educating and motivating patients both young and old, to achieve proper orofacial muscle function and posture.
